Head of Unit, Unit C1 - Antitrust: Electronic communications, DG Competition · European Commission
João is the Head of the Unit C1 at Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission, in charge of antitrust investigations in the Electronic Communications sector. Between 2021 and August 2025, he was the Deputy Head of Unit at the European Commission in units dealing with the application of antitrust rules in the digital and electronic communications sectors. Between 2013 and 2021, he worked as case handler on antitrust and merger control cases in a variety of sectors at the European Commission. Before joining the European Commission, he worked as a senior economist at the Portuguese Competition Authority (2007-20013). He holds a PhD in Economics from the Nova School of Business and Economics (2008). He was a teaching fellow at Nova School of Business and Economics (2002-2009) and at Lille Catholic University (2019-2023). He has published several academic articles in peer review journals, with a particular emphasis on competition in network industries.
